Safeni 48 (Wire)

Datasheet updated 2013-02-18 14:23:36 (supersedes all previous editions)

Safeni 48 is a soft magnetic iron-nickel alloy with high relative permeability, low coercive field strength and high saturation magnetization. The grade is characterized by low content of non-metallic inclusions and uniform properties.

Applications

Safeni 48 can be used in many applications requiring high relative permeability and a high saturation magnetization. The grade is typically used in the following applications:

  • Solenoid valves
  • AC and DC relays
  • Transformers
  • Parts for measuring instruments
  • Magnetic shielding for electronic instruments and communications devices

Standards

  • UNS K94800, K94840
  • W.Nr. 1.3922, 1.3926, 1.3927
  • DIN Ni 48, RNi 12, RNi 8

Heat treatment

After machining, material must be annealed according to the table below to obtain the magnetic properties described above. Mechanical processing sets up internal strains in the material which impair the magnetic properties. Even straightening, if this is required, should be carried out before annealing.

Components should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased prior to annealing and the recommended annealing temperature range is given in the table.

Annealing should be carried out in a protective atmosphere. Only vacuum furnaces or hydrogen atmospheres are recommended.

Heat treatment recommendations
Temperature 1100-1200°C (2010-2190°F)
Time at full temperature 2 to 4 hours
Atmosphere Hydrogen or vacuum
Cooling

Slow cooling, max 200°C/h (360°F/h), to below
200°C (390°F) after which cooling freely in air may follow.
